En décembre 1954 quand elle enregistre son premier album à son nom, Helen Merrill n'a alors que 21 ans. Entièrement orchestré et arrangé par Quincy Jones l'album HELEN MERRILL inaugure une longue carrière. Sa voix douce et suave, entre June Christy et Sarah Vaughan, est à l'aise sur tous les tempos. Dès ses débuts elle fait preuve d'une grande maturité. Elle est une des grandes dames de l'histoire du jazz vocal.
Sur l'album HELEN MERRILL elle est accompagnée par le fameux et brillant trompettiste Clifford Brown à la carrière malheureusement trop courte, il décède à l'âge de 26 ans dans un accident de la route, une année et demi après cet enregistrement.
