Les Shakers (la Société Unie des Croyants) est une communauté protestante, originaire de Manchester (1747). Sous la férule de "Mother Ann", considérée comme leur mère spirituelle, certains membres émigrérent aux Etats-Unis dans un but d'évangélisation. Ils créèrent plusieurs communautés (aujourd'hui pratiquement disparues) principalement dans le Kentucky et le Maine. Les Shakers ont conservé soigneusement plusieurs milliers de leurs chants, entr'autre dans la bibliothèque de Sabbathday Lake (Maine).
