Le dernier concert du Band est avant tout un grand film : un soir de novembre 1976, le Band donne un concert d'adieu aux proportions marathoniennes. Sur scène pendant près de quatre heures, épaulé par un bouquet d'invités historiques (Dylan, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, Joni Mitchell, Dr John, Muddy Waters'), le quintet prend à son compte ce sentiment diffus de lassitude et cette envie de raccrocher qui étreint toute une génération. Une "dernière valse" avant de tourner en rond pour de bon : tel est en substance le propos de Robbie Robertson. Le geste possède en tout cas un certain panache, d'autant que pour immortaliser l'événement, Robertson a la riche idée de faire appel à Martin Scorsese. Choisi pour accompagner le film de Scorsese en 78, le triple vinyle de l'époque n'aura évidemment pas suffi à contenir toutes les chansons du concert et de l'épilogue, intitulé The Last Waltz Suite, que le groupe avait enregistré en studio quelques mois plus tard. La présente édition en quatre cd's réintègre les treize chansons escamotées du show original ainsi que cinq morceaux capturés pendant les répétitions et trois chutes de studio. Mais pour entendre le témoignage le plus précis et percutant du Band sur scène, il vaut toujours mieux investir dans le double-live de 72, Rock of ages, réédité récemment lui aussi dans une version complète qui déchire nettement plus.
