"A tense drama of the Italian resistance -- scored by Ennio Morricone with some nicely subtle touches! Although the soundtrack hails from a period when Morricone was often working with fuller, more dramatic orchestrations, the music here is somewhat spare -- based around isolated woodwind passages or a bit of violin, then underscored with some starker rhythmic moments. The feel's much more like the Morricone we love from the early 70s than some of his overblown bigger soundtracks of the 80s -- and there's a haunting melody that appears on most numbers -- nicely linking together the tracks, almost as a suite of sorts!"
