Le choeur d'hommes YL a été fondé à Helsinki en 1883. Dès le début, il collabora étroitement avec Sibelius pour l'interprétation de ses compositions pour choeur masculin. Certaines d'entre elles ont été spécialement écrites pour YL.
A ce jour, cet ensemble vocal est toujours considéré comme le spécialiste mondial des oeuvres pour choeur d'hommes de Sibelius.
